His Honour David Brunning joins St Philips Chambers

St Philips Chambers is delighted to welcome former Circuit Judge David Brunning as a working door tenant.

David was a Circuit Judge for many years on the Midlands Circuit sitting principally in Nottingham and Leicester as well as the Royal Courts of Justice.

For 13 years David sat as a Deputy High Court Judge and Judge of the Court of Technology and Construction.

In his judicial life David dealt with a wide variety of litigation at the highest level. These cases included commercial and construction disputes involving matters such as the construction at an airport, many cases in the fields of trusts, property, partnership, employment, discrimination, landlord and tenant, educational provision, personal injury, health and safety and actions against public bodies.

David was also extensively involved in training others both for judicial office and for professional life. He was one of a group who trained all judges for the introduction of the new Civil Procedure Rules. The core feature of this was work was with groups and syndicates, encouraging and facilitating problem solving.

David drew up the first Protocol for Public Family Law and spent considerable time assisting those involved to improve and extend their skills. He helped to train doctors in the skills necessary to assemble and provide expert evidence.

He has been a member of the Council of Leicester University for 11 years, and involved in key committees and difficult decision making where persuasion and clarity of thought have been essential.

David is an accredited mediator.
